Tobias Rehberger

Statement:rehberger 01

"Design is not just there to be looked at, but also to look away from – something that has to be dealt with in a museum.

"

Tobias Rehberger (Esslingen, 1966, lives and works in Frankfurt) is undoubtedly one of the most influential and successful German artists of his generation. For twenty years now, he has been working on a consistent body of work in which he undermines artistic ideals such as genius and authenticity. Using strategies from the realm of design, Tobias Rehberger examines the meaning of art and what the future possibilities for art production are. The objects he creates are versatile and can be repeatedly adapted to the context in which they are meant to function.

Early Works

Tobias Rehberger was born in 1966 in Esslingen , Germany He started working in the early nineties and attracted international acclaim for his various forms of artistic outputs: sculptures, industrial objects and handcrafted articles. The concept of transformation is the central theme to his art, which revolves around it and develops from it. Rehberger focused his energies on the process of perception and of awareness, temporality and the sense of transience, discontinuity and ambiguity.

“I think that looking at my work, there is no linearity to be found, but instead themes around which my work revolves, appearing in different lights .” - tobias rehberger said in interview , “How can the things around us be interpreted? Is it truly possible 'to see' a work in its entirety, or does the work, instead, include something more? ... much of my work is based on things which cannot be seen".

Tobias Rehberger currently lives and works in Frankfurt and Berlin,Germany where he employs for his work teams of up to 25 assistants.

Major Installations and Exhibits

JP005 - Moderna Museet - Stockholm 29 August 1998 - 27 September 1998 .Many of Rehberger's works suggest some kind of practical use in both public and private settings. For his Moderna Museet Projekt he has completed a new work, "JP005 (Model for a film)", a cinema for one person, constructed in Prästgården. This comprises the first part of a "reverse film", which breaks up the stereotypical cinema narrative by creating a film step by step from its conclusion. Instead of beginning with what is usually the first stage - the "intrigue" or plot the artist here has begun his film with what is usually the end of the process - the place where the film is shown. This cinema is designed for a single viewer, with only one seat - and without an image on the screen.

"JP005 (Model for a film)" may be seen as Rehberger's contribution to the discussion of film in contemporary art. Rather than focusing on film as technique or semiotic apparatus, he illuminates and problematises film as a form of narrative. The film he creates here, and which he will show in subsequent exhibitions, not only tests the possibilities of different narrative structures but also transforms the collective character of film viewing into an individual experience.

In the summer of 2011, Rehberger designed bridge Slinky Springs . The 406 meter long structure crosses the Rhine-Herne Canal in Oberhausen , Germany.

It connects Imperial Park, to the Emscher Island, the two leisure facilities in the city. Within the two sheet metal twisted into a spiral bands are precast concrete bolted in 16 different colors.

October 23, 2011 - January 08, 2012 .For his project at the Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens, Rehberger develops a series of large and colourful abstract sculptures.

In Rehberger’s total project, the shadows cast by the sculptures on the surrounding walls are at least as important as the objects themselves. Special lighting effects and the slow rotation of the sculptures make that, at certain times of the day, the amorphous shadows on the walls form a hidden message.
